Gardening has many physical and psychological benefits that people in the Gulf don't have access to. Lack of space or time, harsh climate and infertile soil are some of the limitations that discourage many people from starting their own green space.
As more and more people are engaging in technology and the Metaverse becomes more popular, creating an educational virtual game could have a wide audience. It has been found that gamification increases engagement, so this audience would have more possibilities to take up gardening in real life.
If you would like to help us create the first virtual gardening game and educate the younger generation about sustainability and plant life, contact us and we will be happy to give you the full details of our plan.

How to take the challenge?
The rule is very simple, follow the practice below for 7 days continuously and sequentially to make it your daily habit.
Day 1: Find out your carbon footprint. Start your challenge by finding out your carbon footprint with the Footprint calculator tool.
Day 2: Eat Sustainably. Go for a meat & dairy free day. Food is in the top 4 most impactful industries contributing to Green House Gas emissions of which beef contributes to more CO2. You could find more relevant information in this webinar.
Day 3: Low Carbon Commute. You can reduce your Green House Gas emissions by choosing walking over driving, or take bikes, public transports and carpool to work every day. According to Environmental Protection Agency, a personal car emits about 4.7 metric tons of carbon dioxide for a year which is equal to the annual energy use of 400 thousand homes.
Day 4: Energy Efficiency. You can choose from the following:
• Keep lights switched off in unused rooms and corridors, use led lights.
• Avoid charging devices overnight.
• Keep your shower to 6 min.
• Use low power mode
Day 5: You've got m@il Try below things:
• Clean up obsolete emails, remove attachments from emails
• Keep your emails short,
• and send a box link instead of attachment
• Remove the fancy banner or gifs for any internal communication
Day 6: Show Eco-Friendly. Your choices include:
• Repair or reuse an item
• Re-home belongings no longer in use (donate, recycle, reuse)
• Use reusable bags
• Buy local
• No online shopping
Day 7: Achieve more together! Time to share your message about sustainability to your peers or network and inspire them to participate. Share on Yammer groups that you participated in the 7 Days Sustainability Challenge and nominate at least 3 colleagues to do the same using the hashtag #7dayssustainabilitychallenge #achievemore2gether #Itallstartswithme.

The facility cooling towers and the irrigation system require large amount of water on a daily basis and our aim is to reduce the strain on the public water system, as the public TSE quality is not sufficient for the use and as the generation of potable water requires other valuable resources. Naufar is collecting water from the public TSE network and improve its quality for internal reuse to ensure the plant covers 100% of the daily requirements for both systems. As a nursery, we have planted some plants last academic year but this year, we want to further incorporate it into our curriculum to make planting and caring for them a daily routine.
The children will start off with seeding mid of September and be able to see the growth. We can't wait to add a splash of natural green to our space for the children ranging from 1-4 years of age.
We want to implement having a compost bin to the nursery so we can use organic food scraps for it and in turn, generate compost for our plants.

On reclaimed land, Qetaifan Projects LLC is developing a master plan called Qetaifan Project North (QIN) that includes marine connectivity. As part of the construction phase, a large number of contractors are involved with adequate human capital, resulting in environmental implications due to the use of water bottles by required-on-site staff/personnel. The main motivation is to restrict and eventually eliminate the usage of single-use plastic bottles.
The emphasis will be on the following:
1. Avoid the use of single bottle by replacing with reusable bottles either glass or steel etc.
2. A standard-sized bottle will be provided to each member of the project team, which will be refilled from the 19-litre water bottle with dispensers.
3. Single plastic bottle caps will be collected in a designated box and recycled into a machine to redeem points, as initiated by a local hypermarket in Qatar.
4. Site office lads will be given regular training to lead this endeavour, and an incentive program will be announced to inspire them.
5. Waste generation will be calculated, and results will be shared for the overall waste reduction in the plastic generation
6. A cost calculation will be conducted that will directly contribute to reducing the overall project resource cost and creating favourable environmental benefits.
However, for the following six months, we will focus on promoting the usage of reusable glass bottles as opposed to single-use plastic bottles. Consequently, every member of the project team will be more inclined to work toward environmental improvement and effective resource management.

We at the Embassy are encouraging this initiative , we would like to be more conscious when we need to print. We always have to remember that wasting paper, ink and toner doesn't make economic or environmental sense. We hope that by limiting the number of printed documents we might start a small movement of change.

The Challenge: Students should think of a problem in their community or idea related to sustainable behavior, and what kind of solutions they would design to help overcome that problem.
Students are required to
1- Design a creative poster (Digital Image).
2- Develop a plan of action to put their ideas to practice.

As part of Mowasalat (Karwa)'s sustainability initiatives to recycle industrial waste we recycle all our vehicle's engine oil. For used oil, our contracted licensed recycling company collects the used oil from Mowasalat site and this is safely processed at the contractor's waste treatment plant which is in full compliance with the State of Qatar's legal requirements. The used oil is then recycled into 'base oil' products. This base oil is then sold to processing industries in Qatar and even abroad to produce useful healthcare products. We are working towards creating a circular consumption model thereby reducing as mush waste to landfill as possible.

We discovered that over 52% of students at our school do not recycle paper. So we decided that we would start an initiative to help recycle more paper in school. We placed collection boxes around our school for students and staff to put any recyclable paper. Then we took that paper and reused it by turning it into a pulp, placing it into molds and then letting it dry out. We molded paper into board game pieces for the board game 'Hive". Our idea has helped turn paper that would just be thrown away into an item that can actually be used in our school.

This talk will seek to highlight Qatar’s unique challenges and outline the steps that the Earthna Center for a Sustainable Future at Qatar Foundation is taking to help chart a sustainable future for the country.
Standard sustainability definitions do not apply to Qatar. Its small and desert territory means that its primary productivity is very low, and yet Qatar is the richest country in the world on a per-capita basis. How has Qatar achieved this position, and what it means for its future. What about its renewable natural resources, its biodiversity and ecosystems? Are deserts empty places only fit for driving and construction, or are they very unique ecosystems where evolution has tested living forms to their maximum?

Initiative 1: Upcycling/ Recycling Activities
Internal Sustainable Practices (ISP) at AAB includes the upcycling and recycling of excess packaging materials. Composed of volunteers from across Business Units, the Green Team have been making functional products out of excess pallets and tyres such as outdoor furniture, shelving/ racks and storage units with the assistance of the members mostly from the Spare Parts Department.
In line with the above, in the recent project, the AAB Green Team-built custom-made feeder boxes for stray cats around the office vicinity. Endless possibilities are available when we upcycle and recycle. Instead of the pallets ending up in dumping sites, we can create useful items not only for human consumption but even for pets as well.
Event 2: Waste Segregation
AAB has embarked on a Recycling Initiative involving waste segregation of materials that we use on a daily basis. Recycling bins are placed on each floor of the Al Abdulghani Tower.
We move our gathered wastes to the caged bins for collection by Seashore Recycling & Sustainability Centre (SRSC), a recycling company in Qatar. AAB Tower employees and all tenants are encouraged to cooperate in the initiative. Paper, Plastic and Cans are encouraged to be disposed properly for recycling.

Initiative 1: AAB Beach Clean Up Series 2022
The AAB Beach Clean Up Series for 2022 begins in collaboration with Doha Environmental Action Projects (DEAP) for their “Keep Qatar Clean” 300th Beach Clean Up. We play a significant role in the Keep Qatar Clean Project being DEAP’s mobility partner by providing a Toyota Hilux to enable transportation of the bags of collected polluted items from each location to a pick-up area for Baladiya. Our partnership with DEAP is in line with Sustainability Goal Development (SDG) 14—Life Below Water.
Early this year, the team went to Al Arish, north of Qatar—a heritage village where there once stood a police station. Currently, the Coast Guard station is situated there. The ruins added a scenic effect to the place. But what stood out is the energy of the volunteer employees mostly from the Logistics & Vehicle Delivery (LVD) department.
The wastes being washed ashore around the coastal areas just keep on coming. It really needs constant clean ups to prevent plastics from harming marine life.
Initiative 2: Beach Clean Up Zubarah Fort
In celebration of World Clean Up Day, AAB employee volunteers gather in support to the Beach Clean Up organized by the Doha Environmental Action Project (DEAP) and Ministry of Municipality.
Protecting the environment and keep Qatar clean is an initiative to combat the global plastic pollution which greatly affects the environment including marine debris.
Initiative 3: Blood Donation Campaign 2022
The first series of AAB Blood Donation Campaign in support of Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) for the year 2022 was conducted at the Al Abdulghani Tower and Main Service Center. A good turnout of volunteers marked the Campaign successful with a significant contribution to the Blood Bank because of a good number of volunteers and accepted donors coming from the various business units at the Industrial Area and the Al Abdulghani Tower.

Why should you try plogging (aka picking up plastics while working out)? Cleaning up trash while training, is a great way to green up your exercise regime. Spending time moving your body in green or blue spaces, is great for your physical, emotional and mental health. And by picking up trash while your exercising (you can be walking, running, wheeling or even on roller skates), you also help the planet too.

In this first session, we will focus on sensory development and in kids in the spectrum of autism.
Hadiqaa gives them an opportunity to explore their senses (sight, touch, taste, and sound ) in a safe and stimulating environment. Gardening helps children to develop and recognize themselves without even realizing it. They can feel the texture of soil, seeds, flowers, and petals. They get to smell all the amazing flower scents and see all the colorful petals. It also helps develop hand-eye coordination and builds physical strength. Gardening is quite physical and requires the body to work hard digging, carrying, lifting, sieving, watering, etc.
As children garden, they develop important motor skills that will help them improve their senses and enhance creativity, increase social skills and improve self-confidence.
Gardening also reduces stress and helps children cope with anxiety and frustration.
NB : If we have a child who doesn’t like gardening, we can teach them to use it for nature-connection and relaxation strategies. So, whenever they need support, they will consider plants as their best friends!
Register your kids to our fun gardening sessions starting Tuesday 11th of October and let them explore the nature surrounding them and improve their skills and behaviors with a special program.
Addressed to kids aged 4-12 years.
Activities: Basic gardening, mixing soil and repotting, watering and spraying and can include a small craft like painting.

The Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) Sustainability Council is arranging a panel discussion about climate change and the Arab world. Climate change refers to long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns. These shifts may be natural, but since the 1800s, human activities have been the main driver of climate change, primarily due to burning fossil fuels (like coal, oil, and gas), which produce heat-trapping gases. Being the center of oil and gas production, the Middle East makes a lot of greenhouse gases. On the other hand, there is an increased need for climate change awareness in the region, including existing initiatives and how we can make changes as individuals and as a country. This panel discussion includes esteemed members of Qatar who have played different roles in understanding and contributing to climate change awareness in the region. The speakers are from various entities, including the Doha Institute of Graduate Studies (Dr. Laurent A. Lambert), the Arab Youth Climate Movement (Mr. Neeshad Shafi), and Hamad Bin Khalifa University (Dr. Rima Jamal Isaifan). Be there for an engaging discussion on October 12th from 4 - 5 pm at the Lecture Hall A, LAS Building, Education City.
